Since the publication of Gregg Shorthand in 1888, the system has been learned and used by millions of writers. The flexibility of the system, which enables the writer to use it with equal effectiveness for personal, stenographic, and reporting purposes, has made Gregg Shorthand the most widely used system in the world. The successful use of Gregg Shorthand not only in English but also in the many foreign languages to which it has been adapted is striking evidence of the genius of the inventor, John Robert Gregg, in devising the most efficient shorthand alphabet in more than 2,000 years of shorthand history.

The Functional Method of teaching Gregg Shorthand was announced in 1934, and a special manual of the system employing the method was published in 1936. The Functional Method type of presentation, fundamentally a language-art type of teaching, allows much scope for the ingenuity of the individual teacher within the framework of language-art teaching.

In 1949 the Gregg Shorthand Manual Simplified, Functional Method, was issued. This volume employed the many learning and teaching advantages that were made possible by the simplification of Gregg Shorthand, and the text immediately appealed to great numbers of teachers. Especially popular were the marginal reminders, which helped to improve the student's ability to spell and punctuate concurrently with the development of his shorthand skill. The marginal reminders have made a real contribution to the ultimate goal of the shorthand course — accurate and rapid transcription. |

Teachers who have enjoyed using Gregg Shorthand Manual Simplified, Functional Method, will find teaching from the Second Edition an even greater pleasure. In the Second Edition all the helpful teaching and learning features of the initial edition have been retained. The outlines have not been disturbed — there are no changes in outlines. Nor are there any changes in the organization of the book. Like the initial edition, the Second Edition is organized into 10 chapters, which are divided into 70 assignments. The theory is completed with Assignment 53; each sixth assignment is a "breather" in which no new theory is presented. The key to the Reading and Writing Practice exercises of the first 54 assignments is given in the back of the book. Assignments 54 through 70 are supplementary and contain systematic reviews.

Beginning with Chapter 2, each Reading and Writing Practice opens with an applied vocabulary study consisting of several expressions for which the meanings are provided. The expressions are selected from the Reading and Writing Practice. These applied vocabulary studies will help to overcome a major transcription handicap — a limited vocabulary.
