Since the publication of Gregg Shorthand in 1888, the system has been learned and used by millions of writers. The flexibility of the system, which enables the writer to use it with equal effectiveness for personal, stenographic, and reporting purposes, has made Gregg Shorthand the most widely used system in the world. Functional Method. / 기능적 방법
The Functional Method of teaching Gregg Shorthand was announced in 1934, and a special manual of the system employing the method was published in 1936. The Functional Method type of presentation, fundamentally a language-art type of teaching, allows much scope for the ingenuity of the individual teacher within the framework of language-art teaching.	그래그 속기를 교수하기 위한 기능적인 방법은 1934년 공표되었으며, 이 방법을 채택한 시스템에 대한 특별 교재는 1936년 발표되었다. 기능적 방법 형태를 띤 강연은, 근본적으로 언어 기술 형태의 교습법으로, 언어 기술 교습의 틀 안에서 제각기 교사들에게 창의성을 위한 많은 여지를 허용한다.
In 1949 the Gregg Shorthand Manual Simplified, Functional Method, was issued. This volume employed the many learning and teaching advantages that were made possible by the simplification of Gregg Shorthand, and the text immediately appealed to great numbers of teachers. Especially popular were the marginal reminders, which helped to improve the student's ability to spell and punctuate concurrently with the development of his shorthand skill. Teachers who have enjoyed using Gregg Shorthand Manual Simplified, Functional Method, will find teaching from the Second Edition an even greater pleasure. In the Second Edition all the helpful teaching and learning features of the initial edition have been retained. The outlines have not been disturbed — there are no changes in outlines. Nor are there any changes in the organization of the book. Like the initial edition, the Second Edition is organized into 10 chapters, which are divided into 70 assignments. The theory is completed with Assignment 53; each sixth assignment is a "breather" in which no new theory is presented. The key to the Reading and Writing Practice exercises of the first 54 assignments is given in the back of the book. Assignments 54 through 70 are supplementary and contain systematic reviews. During the years that Gregg Shorthand Manual Simplified, Functional Method, has been on the market, teachers have shared with us many valuable and practical suggestions designed to make the teaching and learning of Gregg Shorthand even more effective. These suggestions have led to the incorporation into the Second Edition of new features that should do much to create and maintain the student's interest and to prepare him even more thoroughly for dictation and transcription. In the initial edition of the Gregg Shorthand Manual Simpii-fied, Functional Method, special attention was given to pretranscription training. In that edition, spelling and punctuation were taught concurrently with the shorthand. In the Second Edition the emphasis and attention to pretranscription training are considerably increased. 1. Applied Vocabulary Studies. / 응용 어휘 연구
Beginning with Chapter 2, each Reading and Writing Practice opens with an applied vocabulary study consisting of several expressions for which the meanings are provided. The expressions are selected from the Reading and Writing Practice. The marginal reminders in the Second Edition are introduced in Chapter 6. The explanations of the marginal reminders appear with the assignments in which the marginal reminders are introduced. In addition, the student is given step-by-step instructions on how to treat the marginal reminders in his homework. Beginning with Chapter 8, the last letter in the Reading and Writing Practice appears without marginal reminders. A number of words have also been omitted from the shorthand. Gregg Shorthand Manual Simplified, Functional Method, Second Edition, takes special cognizance of the problem of getting homework done. As in the previous edition, the key to the shorthand for the first 54 assignments is given in the back of the book. By using this key correctly, the student not only covers ground rapidly but also avoids the discouragement that often accompanies his inability to decipher shorthand outlines. Many new features have been added, however, to help the student even more with the important homework phase of shorthand skill development. Each of the ten chapters is introduced by a talk with the student on some phase of his shorthand study. These talks are accompanied by stimulating and meaningful photographs.
